Social ME-dia- LJ3

 The readings from the past couple of weeks have been interesting and informative. I had never before compared blogs and wikis as different ways to provide information and form communities. To me, wikis and blogs had been two completely separate spheres of the internet. I thought of wikis as information and blogs as personal. However, reading about how both can be used for similar purposes changed my perspective. I hadn't thought about using blogs in an informative manner, and I hadn't thought about the community surrounding wikis. When Byington (2011) included a table comparing wikis and blogs, it was unexpected. However, comparing wikis to blogs made me consider how they can be used to connect groups through collaborative information sharing and project work. I hadn't considered it, but it opened my eyes that I already use wikis as a community-forming platform. A Lawless Land: LJ6

 Part 1: It is always interesting, and incredibly concerning, to learn about social media, the internet, and ethics. In fact, it often feels like "Social media ethics" is an oxymoron. While many people do consider the ethical implications of using social media and providing these services, it is too obvious that corporations, especially the ones providing social media to the masses, lack ethical considerations. Casert and Chan's (2021) article about Facebook's rebranding to Meta and its focal shift to the Metaverse as a way to avoid controversy and current issues was eye-opening. Previous readings had merely discussed the Metaverse as Meta's next step and the rebranding as a whole, so this article and the other articles relating to it in this module helped to provide extra context to the shift. I agree with O'Flaherty (2021) when she says she doesn't think Facebook is safe and, if Facebook continues with current trends, the Metaverse certainly won't be...

Welcome to my blog

 Hello, I'm Mikael Michalik and I've been living in Sarasota since I was four years old, though I spend most of my time in Tampa for classes. I'm an English major in the technical and professional concentration with a minor in Mass Communications. Some interesting facts about me: I enjoy walking, almost too much. I try to walk around 4-6 miles a day and enjoy hiking in the mountains of Pisgah National Forest and DuPonte Forest.  I enjoy creating characters, drawing them and coming up with personalities for them. I have way too many and often end up drawing the same few over and over.  My characters often tie in with another hobby of mine: Dungeons and Dragons. I have a backlog of filled out character sheets to go with designs I've made and I anticipate working through them all over time.  I love animals, especially dogs and birds.
